Vizio rolls out dual-band ‘HD’ router, trio of WiFi-equipped Blu-ray players
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsWiFi-equipped TVs may have been Vizio's big focus at CES earlier this year, but it's now expanding things to some other devices as well -- it's just announced a trio of WiFi-equipped Blu-ray players, and a dual-band 'HD" router to go along with them. That router, the XWR100, apparently earns the 'HD' designation by prioritizing HD media streamed to Vizio's VIA-enabled devices, like the company's three just-announced Blu-ray players. Those include the VBR210, VBR220 and VBR231, the latter of which is the first dual-band wireless Blu-ray player, and all of which include Vizio Internet Apps (or VIA) to stream content from Vudu, Netflix and other services. Look for the router (pictured after the break) to set you back $99.99 when it rolls out sometime in the third quarter, while the three Blu-ray players will be available this month and next for $189.99 and $199.99. Head on past the break for the full press release.

WHDI roadmap includes 3D update this year, 4K, Wi-Fi & mobile tie-ins in 2011
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsDon't get too used to WHDI 1.0 (we know you've been stocking up on equipment in secret) the second version of the standard is planned and it adds a familiar list of features, including a very Panasonic 152-inch friendly 4,096x2,1060 resolution. Probably more relevant are plans for WHDI / Wi-Fi integration and same channel co-existence, and mobile device integration. Before WHDI 2.0 hits the streets in Q2 2011, a spec bump including the same 3D formats required by HDMI 1.4a will arriving by the end of the year. Will this be the one wireless HD standard to rule them all? We'll wait and see.WHDI roadmap includes 3D update this year, 4K, Wi-Fi & mobile tie-ins in 2011 originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 23:54:00 EST. TZero closes up shop, UWB all but dead
Posted on February 12, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Industry, Other formats, Others
It's been a slow, painful death, but it's about time to just pull the white sheet over ultra-wideband and let the wireless standard rest in peace. After Intel pulled its support for UWB and proponent WiQuest shut down late last year, all that the format really had left was TZero. After successfully surviving some legal issues, we thought the company was good to go in fighting a hopeless battle against wireless HD upstart AMIMON. Now, it seems that WHDI (that's AMIMON's magic) is free to take the market by storm, but only time will tell if wireless HD is even remotely close to mainstream. In one sense, we're sad to see competition die, but on the other hand, it's always good to see fruitless format wars fade away. Don't be too down on yourself, TZero -- it's not like anyone really had high expectations for you or anything.TZero closes up shop, UWB all but dead originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 22:14:00 EST.
