Movies could be available as a VOD rental before DVD, Blu-ray — for $20 to $30 each
Posted on May 24, 2010 | No CommentsThe MPAA has often stated its desire to offer movies through video on-demand ahead of their release on DVD or Blu-ray -- provided the analog hole was closed -- and now that it has been, the Wall Street Journal reports Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros. are considering a pitch from Time Warner Cable to do just that. The price for cutting the usual four month wait for home viewing to just 30 days? As much as $20 to $30 for a rental. Sony's already tried experimenting with a higher price point on early delivery of Hancock and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs to BRAVIA HDTV owners, but at least they threw in a free Blu-ray copy with the former. So far the studios have only agreed that their current release strategy needs some sort of change, but unless they add some sweeteners we don't see this one shifting us from our current rental/purchase habits.Movies could be available as a VOD rental before DVD, Blu-ray -- for $20 to $30 each originally appeared on Engadget HD on Mon, 24 May 2010 14:57:00 EST. Psycho gets 5.1 surround for the first time on Blu-ray
Posted on May 10, 2010 | No CommentsEven if you've seen Albert Hitchcock's Psycho before (and seriously, you should have) the Blu-ray edition arriving for its 50th Anniversary October 19 has a new trick up its sleeve in the form of a remastered 5.1 surround sound audio track. The original mono soundtrack is included for purists, but it certainly seems like the a due amount of effort was put in by Universal's BluWave Audio postproduction team and third party Audionamix, to create a discrete DTS HD 5.1 that would live up to the standards of a classic, and still light up the special lights on your receiver.

Logitech Harmony Adapter for PlayStation 3 gets official
Posted on March 20, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Other hardware, Remotes, Others
You've got to love it, don't you? Just a day after we caught wind of Logitech's Harmony Adapter for PlayStation 3 (via the always informative FCC), the aforesaid company has come forward and confessed to its plans. The good news is that the adapter is for real, and while we're still not being told too much about the device itself, we do know that it will operate with any Harmony remote and it won't take up a USB port on your console. In other words, it's a simple Infrared-to-Bluetooth converter, though it promises to give Harmony remote users "complete control (including power on / off) over the movie-watching experience on a PS3." We're pleading for more information on pricing and availability, but until that's received, just enjoy your weekend knowing that you'll be able to buy one soon enough.Logitech Harmony Adapter for PlayStation 3 gets official originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 20 Mar 2009 16:48:00 EST. NBC Universal content now available on PlayStation Network
Posted on March 10, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Media streamers, NBC, Internet
Good news for Playstation 3 owners -- NBC and Sony have just announced that NBC Universal content is now available on the PlayStation Network. In addition to NBC shows like The Office, 30 Rock, and Heroes, new movie releases like Milk and Role Models will hit PSN day and date with the DVD release, and back-catalog titles like The 40-Year Old Virgin and The Big Lebowski should already be up. Pricing is ballpark with the competition: $2.99 to $5.99 for SD and HD rentals, and $9.99 to $14.99 for SD and HD purchases. Not bad, but we won't be happy until these fools drop the shenanigans and give us what we really want: Hulu. Make it happen, guys.NBC Universal content now available on PlayStation Network originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 14:47:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
