DirecTV adds 14 HD channels

While DISH Network has taken a temporary step back in its number of HD channels, DirecTV just lit up a few more HD channels. These were among the list trumpeted during the "how do you count to 200 channels?" debate back in April, while several of the Spanish language networks mentioned them have already been activated, this list of 14 consists of movie channels and regional sports networks. be sure to keep your channel count scorecards updated accordingly.DirecTV adds 14 HD channels originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 11:35:00 EST. Logitech Revue gets official: Google TV companion box coming this Fall
Posted on June 18, 2010 | No CommentsWell, lookie here -- Logitech's Revue is official, and it's coming this Fall to make your HDTV even smarter. We knew from day one that Logi had been tapped to produce one of the first Google TV set-top boxes ever, and details on the little guy have been trickling out ever since. Described as a "Google TV companion box," the device is expected to "combine everything on the web, cable and satellite [with] apps, video calling and more." We're told to be patient for specs and further deets, so we suppose we'll do just that. While pouting.

DirecTV software update locks up HD DVRs nationwide — Update: Fixed
Posted on June 8, 2010 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/hardware/DirecTV_software_update_locks_up_HD_DVRs_nationwide'; It looks like one of DirecTV's astronauts had more trouble flipping switches than their DISH counterparts, after a software or guide data update last night knocked out HD DVRs all over -- and not for the first time. Currently the only advice needed to get back in working order is to reset the box twice (there's a red button on the front, underneath the flap) within a thirty minute period (the official website indicates you can wait as little as 15 seconds between resets) and all should be well, but good luck getting through to customer service to get that message right now. Countdown to an apology starts... now.

DirecTV, DISH offer “free HD for life” with a few strings — anyone signing up?
Posted on June 7, 2010 | 2 CommentsJust in case you missed the ads airing on TV or splattered across websites (like this one) DirecTV and DISH Network have launched headlong into their latest war. DISH started things last week by offering "free HD for life" (ad embedded from YouTube after the break), eliminating the $10 service charge for new customers signing up for a two year contract with automatic bill pay, or existing customers who either pay $99 "HD upgrade fee" up front, or sign a two year deal and add auto bill payment to their accounts. This weekend, DirecTV began offering its own "HD free for life" deal that scrubs its $10 fee for new customers under similar requirements to the DISH offer. By comparison, HD service is usually included with digital cable packages but we're wondering if dropping the extra fees is enough to make you think of joining the satellite team, or switching your current agreement.

Motorola’s 4 tuner DVR for Japan
Posted on May 31, 2010 | No CommentsIf there was any doubt that cable operators were to blame for the crappy set-top boxes most people use -- and not Motorola or Cisco -- then this VIP2060 puts it to rest. This DVR will likely never see the US shores with its four tuners and 500GB hard drive because that would be just too awesome. Add in the box's ability to tune IPTV, satellite and over the air signals and it really makes it a dream box that we'll never get. Of course all these specs don't shed any light on quality of the software and since the box is unobtainable, we're going to just believe that the software is dreaded, because that is what its going to take to get us through this post.
