DuPont can print a 50-inch OLED TV in two minutes, you’ll be waiting a little longer
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No CommentsRight now LG's 15-inch OLED TV is the cheapest you can get -- but at about $2,500 it won't be rocking too many peoples' lives. We've heard promises of dropping costs thanks to printed displays for ages now, but never on a scale like this. DuPont has teamed up with Dainippon Screen to create a printing technique capable of line-feeding a 50-inch display in just two minutes. Two minutes! The printer is likened to a high precision garden hose, flying over the display surface at a speed of five meters per second depositing that good, good OLED juice in just the right places with nary a drip or an unwanted sprinkle. DuPont Displays President William Feehery says the technique "is worth scaling up" and could compete on cost with LCDs while delivering a 15-year lifespan. That's not quite the 100 years they promised us last time, but we'll take it. No word on when, or if, this technique will actually be deployed en masse.

DuPont claims it can make OLED HDTVs more durable & cheaper, can it make them exist?
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No CommentsA pair of announcements from DuPont should put wind in the sails of all those still waiting for the OLED HDTV of their dreams. First up is word that with its Gen 3 solution materials, able to print HDTV-sized displays that can to stand the test of time have advanced from the lab to a "scalable manufacturing process" and added on another claim that new printing processes can create a 50-inch television in less than two minutes. there's no word that any display manufacturers have licensed DuPont's tech yet, but we figure OLED fans are used to being patient.

Samsung preparing for 42-inch OLED TV trials in 2011?
Posted on May 14, 2010 | No CommentsIt's approaching mid 2010 and you know what's missing. Jetpacks. Jetpacks and those 30-inch and larger OLED TVs we were promised. Hell, the largest OLED TV available for retail currently is only 15-inches... if you can both find and afford it. Now OLEDNet claims that Samsung Mobile Display -- you know, the cellphone OLED guys -- is purchasing equipment in preparation for bringing its 5.5 generation facility on-line in the first half of 2011. That should give Samsung the ability make 42-inch AMOLED TVs on a trial basis by the end of the twenty-eleven. But with relatively cheap LCDs steadily closing the gap on AMOLEDs size, contrast, and power savings advantages, well, we'll believe it when we see the first big screen OLED TVs in our living rooms. And with 3D LCDs (and plasmas) all the rage amongst distracted and financially-vested television manufacturers, we don't see that happening anytime soon.

Posted on May 9, 2010 | No CommentsIt's been exactly one year since we asked what display tech you were looking forward to purchasing next, and it's time to see if opinion have changed. 12 months later are you still optimistic OLED displays will ever be on sale in large screen sizes? Impressed by the progress of LCDs? Wowed by the 3D and 2D performance of the latest plasmas? Of course, there's still a few RPTVs kicking around, projectors have their place and there's other display tech on the horizon, so let us know what you're looking forward to in 2010 and beyond.

Organic Light Emitting Transistors might make us forget all about OLED
Posted on May 6, 2010 | No CommentsStill waiting on that big-screen OLED TV? Yeah, so are we, but here's some news that could mean they're coming soon: OLED tech has just been obsoleted. Seriously. We still can't even afford an 11-inch model and now we have to start pining for something new: OLET. That's Organic Light Emitting Transistor, tech that researcher Michele Muccini at the Institute of Nanustructured Materials has just proven can be between two and 100 times as efficient as OLED. OLETs rely on three layers of material, with the bottom layers carrying a charge, the middle layer (the meat in this high-tech sandwich) emitting photons when excited by the bottom, and the top layer selectively letting those photos through. All three combined are just 62nm thick. It's this separation of layers and horizontal flow of current that gives OLET its efficiency and it's believed that it could not only be used for (next) next-generation displays but also for on-chip optical interconnects. When will an OLET HDTV will hit the market? Don't even go there.
