Xbox 360 3D gaming a reality with LG partnership
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No Commentsvar digg_url = 'http://digg.com/xbox/Xbox_360_3D_gaming_a_reality'; The image above is unmistakeable: 3D gaming on an Xbox 360 with the help of an LG 3D television. It's the details that we're sorting out from LG's Korean press release. From the looks of it, LG and Microsoft have entered into a memorandum of understanding to jointly market LG's new 3D telvisions along side 3D-capable Xbox 360 games in South Korea, then later expanding throughout the Asia Pacific region. If we're reading this correctly then it appears set to begin by bundling Xbox 360 3D games with LG 55/47LX9500 LED televisions sometime at the end of June. In other words, we're not seeing anything specific claiming new Xbox 360 hardware, just like we've seen on the PS3.Xbox 360 3D gaming a reality with LG partnership originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 May 2010 01:55:00 EST. WD TV Live HD gets ‘Play To’ functionality, full Windows 7 compliance
Posted on May 7, 2010 | No CommentsThis silvery-set top box above may look rather drab, but never fear: its next production run will sport a nice, colorful Windows 7 sticker. That's because Western Digital recently signed an agreement to make its WD TV Live HD network media players compatible with Microsoft's "Play To" feature, allowing you to push media right to your TV from a Windows Media Player 12-equipped PC. While the feature actually snuck its way into firmware revision 1.02.21 in late March, WD only just began trumpeting its inclusion today... possibly to let memories of its disastrous prior update fade. Whatever the reason, the box is not the "first network media player compatible with Windows 7" -- Denon has four recievers that predate it. Press release and an example of what 'Play To' looks like, right after the break.

Is 1080p enough resolution for everything?
Posted on April 30, 2010 | No CommentsUsually when we're talking about a Pete Brown of Microsoft it is the one who works on Media Center, but this other Pete gives his opinion on something also near and dear to our heart; he says that HDTVs have ruined the PC display market. His point is that while the technology exists to produce super high dots per inch displays, most are 1920x1200. He's totally right and we've wondered why there aren't more super high resolution displays for our computers as well, but we're not so sure it is all HDTVs fault like he says. What we wonder if most people even like super high density displays because either they're still running XP -- that doesn't let you adjust to high DPI displays -- or just because what they have is good enough. In the end, we too want the more pixels, but blaming HDTVs? Nah.Is 1080p enough resolution for everything? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 30 Apr 2010 22:21:00 EST. Xbox Live gets 1080p Zune video store, Netflix browsing, Twitter and Facebook integration
Posted on June 1, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Media streamers, Other hardware, Internet
Microsoft is busy announcing a slew of upgrades to Xbox Live, and the biggest news so far is relaunch of the video service, now Zune-branded with 1080p instant-on streaming content in 18 countries. XBL is also now integrated with Facebook -- your Facebook account can be linked to your Gamertag, and games will support Facebook Connect for sharing content online. That's pretty huge -- but if that wasn't enough, you're also getting Twitter and Last.fm in the deal. Want more? Netflix users will now be able to browse the entire catalog instead of simply loading their queue, and Microsoft has also gotten its Party Watch system in order, so you'll be able to heckle videos with your online friends. Last but not least, there's now live TV streaming for UK and Ireland gamers, who'll get Premier League soccer live from Sky. All in all, a solid set of updates for XBL -- but we'll wait and see how that "1080p" video looks before we pronounce Blu-ray dead. PR blurb after the break.
