Fancast redesign highlights what’s streaming in HD
Posted on June 10, 2010 | No CommentsThere was a time when Comcast's Fancast.com was about streaming video aggregation instead of remote DVR scheduling and integrated XFINITY / TV Everywhere madness, and now it's given that content a new front end. The new design for the Full Episodes section offers a very Netflix-ish look with thumbnails instead of rows of text for each program currently streaming, but most importantly it now more clearly points out what is available to watch in 720p HD. Users can filter by HD availability, genre, network and more, plus see info on shows on mouseover instead of clicking through. On the surface everything looks slick and usable from here, give it a once over and let us know how it holds up.Fancast redesign highlights what's streaming in HD originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 07:49:00 EST. U-Verse updates Total Home DVR, Yellow Pages app features
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No CommentsIt looks like U-verse customers won't be left out of all the set-top box upgrade madness going around lately, as AT&T has announced two upgrades on the way for the services. Total Home DVR users will get more was to customize their recording settings with a Series Priority option to help resolve any programming conflicts four tuners can't take care of, a Keep At Most feature to specify how many episodes of a particular program to keep and Series Delete to remove an entire series with one stroke. The Yellow Pages TV App has also been upgraded, beyond just letting viewers search local business info on their TV, there's now a "Make a Call" button to automatically ring the business from their home or mobile phone. Still waiting for mobile program downloads? So are we.Continue reading U-Verse updates Total Home DVR, Yellow Pages app features

Torrent’s SureConnect HDMI cables stay put with magnets, blink with madness
Posted on April 15, 2009 | No CommentsWhile we love the transmission capabilities of HDMI, we loath the fact that the HDMI standard doesn't specify a locking mechanism. If you've ever wall mounted a flat screen TV or tried to stuff your receiver into too tight a rack then you're probably familiar with HDMI's weak-azz connector. Now we have what appears to be a first of its kind, magnetic HDMI connector from Torrent, Inc. -- at least its the first to pass ATC compliance testing. Called MagLoc, the magnetic connector with sliding sleeve for optimal fit is said to be 5x stronger than your typical HDMI cable connector. Of course, anyone who's familiar with the magnetic "locks" on some laptop power cords can assure you that the technology is nowhere near as strong as mechanical fasteners. Still, it's a start.
Torrent's higher spec'd SureConnect Advanced and Elite cables also feature the totally over-the-top "VeriFYI" (ugh) indicator lights to confirm the end-to-end connection. VeriFYI blinks to confirm the HDMI cable you just inserted is in fact inserted -- something you should be able to confirm with the same pair of eyes looking at the jack. Insert the other side of the cable and VeriFYI will glow steady for one minute after testing the end-to-end connection. It then repeats this semi-useful (assuming your cables are easily visible) test each time you power up your system. While MagLoc sounds promising, it appears that the cables have yet to reach retail channels. We'll let you know as soon as that changes.
