Casio’s slim XJ-A projectors repurposed for gaming, we take a gander
Posted on June 18, 2010 | No CommentsCasio's XJ-A series projectors wowed us in January with an ultra-slim 43mm design, but at E3 2010 we got the chance to see whether image quality was equally bright -- the watchmaker was there with some economical models to attract the portable gaming crowd. Sure enough, it's an interesting choice if you want to play Xbox 360 in the field. Though hefty, the projector's small enough to fit into a messenger bag, and can throw a pretty decent-sized screen; using the company's 2,500 lumen, XJ-A240 model ($1,000), we emulated a 70-something-inch, 720p HDTV. At that size and resolution, colors were a little washed out, but impressive nonetheless -- though we did note that when attempting to play 1080p content on the same projector, the result was quite fuzzy.
Casio claims that image's good for 20,000 hours, as the projector doesn't use a bulb, relying instead on a proprietary combo of laser and LED. The PJ accepts all standard TV resolutions through VGA or HDMI and has optional composite and component video breakout cables, though sadly no audio passthrough -- only a 1W integrated speaker. Mac mini updated with HDMI, aluminum unibody, and SD card reader
Posted on June 15, 2010 | No CommentsWould you look at that, some love for the seemingly abandoned desktop crowd. Apple has today unveiled a freshly redesigned Mac mini, which benefits from a unibody aluminum exterior and more grunt under the hood. Prices start rolling at $699, where you'll get a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB of RAM, and a 320GB hard drive. HDMI-out is finally included, along with an SD card reader, 802.11n wireless, a Mini DisplayPort jack, and what Apple claims is a doubling of graphics performance thanks to an NVIDIA GeForce 320M chip inside. Then again, when you double a little, you still end up with not much. The newly polished nettop is a minimalist 1.4 inches tall, but manages to fit all the power circuitry inside, which means (yay!) there'll be no power brick to spoil your hipster desk space.
Don't fret if you were looking to drop the optical drive, Apple retains the config option that allows you to add in a second HDD in lieu of its DVD burner. You can grab two 500GB plate spinners, Snow Leopard Server (we thought Apple only had one OS version?), 4GB of RAM, and a 2.66GHz Intel chip for $999. Finally, the new enclosures will come with user-accessible memory slots courtesy of a removable panel at the bottom of the case. Onkyo has three new THX certified AV Receivers
Posted on June 5, 2010 | No CommentsGreat HD isn't perfect without great sound so you'll be excited to hear that Onkyo has three new THX certified AV Receivers. Not to take anything away from the first Onkyo 3D ready receivers that started shipping just a few months ago, this new trio is in another class. The TX-NR1008, TX-NR808, and TX-NR708 are all network connected with DLNA 1.5, feature HDMI 1.4a for all your 3D needs, and sport the legendary Faroudja DCDi Cinema scaler which will work wonders on even the lowest quality video. While all three have multi-room capabilities, only the TX-NR1008 has amps to power three rooms, while the 808 can do two and the 708 just includes line outputs for a second zone. The big boy is also the only one to include advanced ISF video calibration controls adjustments for every source. All three will start shipping in July with prices ranging from $899 for the TX-NR708 to $1399 for TX-NR1008. Full release with many more specs after the jump.

Panasonic’s new sound bar and surround sound system are 3D ready
Posted on June 5, 2010 | No CommentsIf you've been waiting for new audio gear that features HDMI 1.4 and leverages its new features like the ability to pass Full 3D HD and an auto return channel, here are two new ones. The most interesting of the new lineup is the SC-ZT2 wireless audio system (pictured above) which uses two wireless speakers to render the same surround sound as a 7.1 system -- or so Panasonic says, but we'll have to take their word on the sound quality, but no doubt it looks cool. It is available now and retails for $999. Also new to the lineup is the SC-HTB10 and SC-HTB500 sound bars. The 500 features a separate subwoofer and will be available in August for $349, while the 10 has an integrated sub and will be available this month for $199. PlayStation 3 is finally HDTV ready with an HDMI cable pack-in for Father’s Day
Posted on June 3, 2010 | No CommentsIt's always seemed a bit ridiculous to us that a console that promised "full HD features from the start" was never capable of playing games or movies in high definition right out of the box, but this special Father's Day PS3 bundle fixes that with an HDMI cable packed in. Of the many PlayStation 3 SKUs so far, none have come with anything other than standard def-only composite cables, requiring add-on component cables (the ones for PS2 always worked) for 720p/1080i or an aftermarket HDMI cable for 1080p, and retailers have been only too happy to limit their supply to $40+ options. The Xbox 360 used to earn a gold star for including component cables and later HDMI in some packages, but recently dropped HD cables in the name of saving a few bucks. We're sure you've already got Monoprice and other bargain cable sellers bookmarked, but at least we can rest easy knowing Dad can enjoy LittleBigPlanet or a Blu-ray movie on his HDTV without having to run back out for the proper cables.
