RCN picks up seven of Viacom’s HD channels
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No Comments
RCN's hardly the first to go for Viacom's 7-pack of HD channels, but we're sure fans of Ultimate Warrior, The Hills, The Daily Show, iCarly and other programs will be glad to have them. Comedy Central, CMT, MTV, Nickelodeon, Spike, VH1 and BET go live today, with HD video on-demand offerings hitting servers July 1. RCN's claiming 100 HD VOD viewing choices, just a few thousand or so behind Comcast at this point, but we figure an upgrade is an upgrade, and at least on RCN you can watch them on a TiVo Premiere, so there's that right?Continue reading RCN picks up seven of Viacom's HD channels

Are consumers really ready to pay for 3D at home? Survey says ‘no’
Posted on June 24, 2010 | 1 CommentOh, sure -- the results found here aren't exactly what one would call "scientific," but coupled with our own reaction gathering, we're confident that the conclusions drawn are far from inaccurate. The gang over at Technologizer gathered a group with varied demographics in New York in order to sit a spell and give their opinions on 3D content; everything from 3D "American Idol" to World Cup matches were shown, and even a few kiddo programs were ran for the youngsters. All told, most everyone was at least impressed with the 3D sports coverage, and the majority agreed that not everything benefited from being in 3D. But were they so impressed that they'd go shell out for a new TV, 3D equipment and a 3D pay-TV package? Hardly. In fact, it was tough to find a single viewer who was eager and willing to drop a wad of cash to get three-dee into their abode. Go on and give that source link a visit if you don't believe us -- no matter how you slice it, we'd say that in-home 3D has a far harder road to mainstream than HD ever did.Are consumers really ready to pay for 3D at home? Hulu reportedly talking to CBS, Viacom about inclusion in Plus subscriber package
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No CommentsIt's Wednesday so that must mean... yes, it's time for another Hulu premium service "leak" to appear in MSM. The most recent rumor, reported by BusinessWeek, indicates the streaming video site is talking to CBS and Viacom about getting their properties on what will be called "Hulu Plus" and cost $9.95 a month and potentially offer subscribers more shows and more older episodes. Traffic dipped significantly after Viacom yanked The Daily Show and The Colbert Report from Hulu in April, we'll see if a share of that premium money is enough to lure them back, and if the long rumored service ever actually launches.Hulu reportedly talking to CBS, Viacom about inclusion in Plus subscriber package originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 18:47:00 EST. DirecTV adds 14 HD channels
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No Comments
While DISH Network has taken a temporary step back in its number of HD channels, DirecTV just lit up a few more HD channels. These were among the list trumpeted during the "how do you count to 200 channels?" debate back in April, while several of the Spanish language networks mentioned them have already been activated, this list of 14 consists of movie channels and regional sports networks. be sure to keep your channel count scorecards updated accordingly.DirecTV adds 14 HD channels originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 11:35:00 EST.
