ITV HD fails to show England’s first World Cup 2010 goal to the home fans (video)
Posted on June 13, 2010 | No CommentsWhile ESPN's World Cup presentation has improved by leaps and bounds over the 2006 effort, UK watchers got a nasty surprise on the high definition feed of ITV during yesterday's highly anticipated United States / England match. At the exact moment England scored its first goal, ITV HD inexplicably switched to a commercial (archived on YouTube after the break) ruining the first great moment of the tournament for many fans. Apparently this isn't new for ITV, which had a similar mistake last year when it made an automated switch to commercial just in time to miss the winning goal in the FA Cup. In this case, what's done is done and the network has already apologized for the "transmission error" (sounds familiar) let us know in the comments -- especially those outside the US -- how your network of choice is handling the beautiful game.Continue reading ITV HD fails to show England's first World Cup 2010 goal to the home fans (video)

Saving Private Ryan Blu-ray discs recalled due to audio glitch
Posted on May 14, 2010 | No Comments
So nice, they'll have to release it twice. Apparently a problem with the audio synchronization in at least one of the chapters of Saving Private Ryan slipped past Technicolor and Paramount, causing the whole lot to be recalled. If you own it, you've got a bad disc, so check the press release after the break for a number to call for the replacements which should arrive at retail next week on the 18th -- check for a yellow UPC label to make sure you're getting a fixed one. We hadn't noticed any of the numerous reviews mention problems with the audio, let us know if you picked up on it when you watched.Continue reading Saving Private Ryan Blu-ray discs recalled due to audio glitch

Samsung fixes Avatar Blu-ray problems with firmware updates
Posted on April 30, 2010 | No CommentsBeing stuck with a Blu-ray player that couldn't handle what is (probably) the most popular movie on the format of all-time sounds like a bit of a problem, which Samsung has moved quickly to resolve with firmware updates for its BD-UP5000 (to version 1.5) and BD-P1400 (to version 2.13) Blu-ray players. Forum reports indicate all is well on Pandora once users have upgraded to the new versions with no lingering BD+ DRM issues getting in their way. Of course, the question of why legitimate buyers had to wait several days just to play a movie that was still ripped and redistributed without copy protection as soon as it launched remains unanswered. So is anyone else still having Avatar playback problems, or is all well in your high bitrate neck of the woods?

Hulu to PlayStation 3 browsers: “This video is not available on your platform”
Posted on June 27, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Media streamers, Other hardware, Internet
The PlayStation 3 has kept access to Hulu even without PlayOn or other workaround while others were blocked -- with the exception of its own remote friendly desktop software -- thanks to its browser's Flash support, but this morning multiple users have reported the above message indicating "Unfortunately, this video is not available on your platform. We apologize for any inconvenience." Some odd glitch related to the recent 2.80 firmware update or other temporary problem, or is this the latest platform to get the Boxee treatment when trying to bring streaming video to TV screens? We've reached out to Hulu for an explanation but so far, haven't heard a response. Interestingly, the Hulu TOS was just updated as of June 26, and although we haven't found any PS3-specific passages, changing a browser's user-string to match the console reveals it is definitely being specifically blocked.
