Kinect tech destined for TV-embedded greatness in 2011, HTPC integration later this year
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No CommentsFrom Tel Aviv unknown to Xbox gaming wunderkind, PrimeSense has already had quite a run, but the camera-control tech that powers Kinect is destined for new applications before long. VP Adi Berenson tells us the company's already signed deals to put PrimeSense inside HTPCs by the end of the year, and has at least one cable company ready to launch a gesture-controlled set top box by summer 2011. The end goal is to provide natural human control over TV-based media consumption, said Berenson, who's working to get cameras in TVs themselves sometime late next year.
Like Kinect, these solutions will have a pair of 640 x 480 camera sensors to measure user position in 3D space, but don't expect them to have motorized tilt functionality or voice recognition -- PrimeSense said it won't be able to make those available for manufacturers, as they're all Microsoft ideas. The gesture recognition has reportedly evolved, though, and we're eager to check that out soon. See what it used to look like in our GDC 2010 preview.Kinect tech destined for TV-embedded greatness in 2011, HTPC integration later this year originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 03:22:00 EST. Logitech Revue gets official: Google TV companion box coming this Fall
Posted on June 18, 2010 | No CommentsWell, lookie here -- Logitech's Revue is official, and it's coming this Fall to make your HDTV even smarter. We knew from day one that Logi had been tapped to produce one of the first Google TV set-top boxes ever, and details on the little guy have been trickling out ever since. Described as a "Google TV companion box," the device is expected to "combine everything on the web, cable and satellite [with] apps, video calling and more." We're told to be patient for specs and further deets, so we suppose we'll do just that. While pouting.

WHDI roadmap includes 3D update this year, 4K, Wi-Fi & mobile tie-ins in 2011
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsDon't get too used to WHDI 1.0 (we know you've been stocking up on equipment in secret) the second version of the standard is planned and it adds a familiar list of features, including a very Panasonic 152-inch friendly 4,096x2,1060 resolution. Probably more relevant are plans for WHDI / Wi-Fi integration and same channel co-existence, and mobile device integration. Before WHDI 2.0 hits the streets in Q2 2011, a spec bump including the same 3D formats required by HDMI 1.4a will arriving by the end of the year. Will this be the one wireless HD standard to rule them all? We'll wait and see.WHDI roadmap includes 3D update this year, 4K, Wi-Fi & mobile tie-ins in 2011 originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 23:54:00 EST. Panasonic’s 152-inch 4K-resolution 3D plasma ships this fall
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No CommentsSay goodbye to the former king of Panasonic plasmas, the old 103-inch that toured the country and took center stage in presidential elections is old news, moved aside for a new family of commercial displays including the 152-inch 4K resolution 3DTV towered over all at this year's CES. Just in case 4096 x 2160 is too much resolution, there are 103- and 85-inch 1080p versions available as well, but seriously, look at that thing. You know Mark Cuban is going to buy one -- why shouldn't you? Because you don't have $500,000+ laying around, because it can't possibly fit in your house, because you'd never go outside again if you owned one -- stop making excuses, it's unbecoming.Continue reading Panasonic's 152-inch 4K-resolution 3D plasma ships this fall

Poll: Do you think Avatar will ship on Blu-ray 3D this year?
Posted on May 29, 2010 | No CommentsFox's flat denial appeared to squelch the possibility of a 2010 release of Avatar on Blu-ray 3D disc, but HollywoodinHiDef is suggesting Panasonic has secured an exclusive and will pack it in with HDTVs and Blu-ray players in November. Of course, that matches the original information mentioned to the Wall Street Journal by James Cameron, plus Panasonic has participated heavily in the movie's promotion and would love a little return on its investment sooner rather than later. Still, this remains firmly in rumor territory so we'll bring the question to you, will we be able to watch Avatar in 3D, at home, in 2010?
