Sony Surround Sound System gives your PS3 a matching soundbar for $199
Posted on June 15, 2010 | No CommentsSony's snuck in one more announcement after today's E3 press conference, this fall it's unveiling an all-in-one Surround Sound System for the PlayStation 3. It will go on sale worldwide for $199 / €199, or 19,800 and accepts audio via optical or analog inputs -- no HDMI 1.4 here -- and supports Dolby digital, DTS, MPEG-2 AAC and Linear PCM audio formats. Sony's established its S-Force PRO Front Surround technology that promises realistic surround sound without the additional speakers in its HT-CT150 and HT-CT350 soundbar systems, but those include a separate subwoofer, HDMI and retail for $100 and $200 more, respectively. Those shortcomings make it doubtful audiophiles will look twice, but for an easy dormroom or bedroom upgrade this CECH-ZVS1 could easily do the trick, specs are after the break.

Sony releases Blu-print 6 software for mastering Blu-ray 3D movies
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsCloudy with a Chance of Meatballs on Blu-ray 3D doesn't make its retail debut until next week, but you can get a taste of the tools used to make it right now, as Sony has announced the availability of its Blu-print 6 and Z Depth software packages. The latest version of Blu-print adds "Profile 5" (read: 3D) authoring compliance to its list of features, integrating all the offset metadata for 3D menus and working with MVC encoded video, while adding a few non-3D features like new DTS-HD encoding support and Windows Vista 64-bit compatibility. Z Depth's job is keeping subtitles properly aligned in 3D, just one of the new issues that need to be dealt with in these discs. No word on a price tag, but judging by the initial version's $50,000 retail value, we're figuring if you have to ask...

Sonic bringing DTS 5.1 audio to Blockbuster, Best Buy VOD services
Posted on June 10, 2010 | No CommentsWe've talked a lot about picture quality differences between downloads and disc, but audio is also a big part of the experience and Sonic appears committed to improving that in its new deal with DTS. No word on the exact specs, but the partnership will result in DTS "high performance" audio support including 5.1 surround in the RoxioNow video platform that supports Blockbuster and Best Buy's digital movie stores. Like Netflix, it plans to add the extra channels of audio later this year, check the press release after the break while we wait to see who gets there first.

HD 101: Overscan and why all TVs do it
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No CommentsThe concept of overscan seems particularly difficult for geeks to comprehend -- normal people usually don't care to even understand it -- and some even get down right confrontational when they first learn that all TVs do it. But the fact is that even the latest LCDs and Plasmas don't show all 2 million pixels of a 1080p signal out of the box. Instead about 3 percent of 'em are cropped off the edges (as illustrated by the red line in the image above) and the remaining pixels are scaled to fill in all the pixels of your HDTV. The real kick in the head is that the reason isn't a good one, especially when you consider the advanced technology that's available today. So in this HD 101 we're going to cover what overscan is, why it's there, and finally how to "fix" it.

Repo Men Blu-ray disc gets the premium treatment

With a 22% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and no Emilio Estevez we're not sure Repo Men deserves a top of the line Blu-ray release, but it appears to be geting one. Universal's stuffed the disc full of of extras, including pocket BLU functionality, letting uses control the action from their iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry device or a connected PR or Mac, as well as pull up the video timeline or browse other titles while the movie plays. Of course, its U-Control tech, BD-Live My Scenes bookmarking and social BLU social networking features are also accounted for, plus a wealth of extras in HD and DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack.
