AT&T U-verse will have ESPN 3D at launch, for a fee
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No CommentsWe're just two days away from the launch of the first 3D channel in the US, and U-verse will be ready. The third broadcaster to announce it will carry ESPN 3D after DirecTV and Comcast, it is the first to charge an additional fee for the privilege. $10 per month adds the "3D Technology Package" to your U-verse viewing options -- similar to Comcast and different from DirecTV's approach, it works with all the boxes but will require users to manually switch to 3D mode on their TVs -- which at the moment will consist only of ESPN 3D, although the company promises its goal is to offer a "wide range" of 3D content just like its current HD lineup (which it also charges an extra $10 to access.) Have U-verse but haven't shelled out for a 3DTV, glasses, and this new channel? There's still the Multiview app to look forward to, with four ESPN channels on screen at once and coverage in up to six different languages you won't miss a single flop or injured star player during the entire tournament, we promise.Continue reading AT&T U-verse will have ESPN 3D at launch, for a fee

DirecTV quickly signs up the first baseball 3D broadcast
Posted on May 5, 2010 | No Comments
After being left out of the Masters 3D presentation, DirecTV isn't missing out on this one. It's teaming up with FSN Northwest and YES Network to bring home two games between the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners on July 10 and 11, although they will only be viewable by customers in the normal home footprint of both sports networks. Unfortunately it looks like the flyover states will miss out on the games, but those with a 3DTV and DirecTV will already have enjoyed plenty of World Cup action, and can look forward to the All-Star Game on July 13. Multichannel News indicates YES Network COO Ray Hopkins said other networks will have the "opportunity" to cut deals regarding the games, so if you're on another broadcaster but live in the home area,s there's a possibility you will see them as well. Expect six to eight 3D camera angles, including a few from lower than usual positioning, to bring the game home. Whether it's an exclusive or not for a couple of regular season games probably isn't that big of a deal, but it will be interesting to see which, if any, of the other broadcasters snap up ESPN 3D ahead of the World Cup next month.Continue reading DirecTV quickly signs up the first baseball 3D broadcast

It’s official: DTV “hard date” moved to June 12
Posted on February 4, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Regulatory, OTA
After much wrangling, the DTV Delay Act has worked its way through the House of Representatives and will certainly be signed by President Obama, changing the cutoff date for analog broadcasts from February 17 to June 12. Don't expect this to bring a sudden end to digital TV confusion, since stations can switch prior to that date, and according to the FCC up to 61% will be able to. Since simply powering analog equipment costs thousands of dollars a month, OTA TV watchers will want to check their local broadcaster's plans as more than a few will be going ahead with the original date for better or worse. Got an unused, expired coupon? No need to head to Retrevo just yet, since you'll now be able to reapply to the again-funded coupon program. Of course, the FCC still has to figure out how to implement the new law, with only a few days to prepare, tomorrow's open meeting on the subject should be very interesting. It's official: DTV "hard date" moved to June 12 originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 04 Feb 2009 16:41:00 EST.
