AT&T considering cutting its spending on U-Verse?
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsAT&T could be ready to join Verizon in pulling back spending on its TV business, as the Wall Street Journal reports CEO Randall Stephenson said the company would have to "re-evaluate whether we put shovels in the ground" in the face of new regulation on broadband internet providers. Current targets see U-Verse increasing its service area from the current 24 million homes to 30 million in 2011, but that's now at risk. Beyond just digging ditches and installing new boxes to bring services to different neighborhoods we'd like to see further expansion on features (Xbox 360, c'mon AT&T, especially with the new model) while some have complained about still being restricted to only one HD channel at a time in some areas and of course, there's value in competition for local cable providers.AT&T considering cutting its spending on U-Verse? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 16 Jun 2010 16:07:00 EST. AT&T U-verse will have ESPN 3D at launch, for a fee
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No CommentsWe're just two days away from the launch of the first 3D channel in the US, and U-verse will be ready. The third broadcaster to announce it will carry ESPN 3D after DirecTV and Comcast, it is the first to charge an additional fee for the privilege. $10 per month adds the "3D Technology Package" to your U-verse viewing options -- similar to Comcast and different from DirecTV's approach, it works with all the boxes but will require users to manually switch to 3D mode on their TVs -- which at the moment will consist only of ESPN 3D, although the company promises its goal is to offer a "wide range" of 3D content just like its current HD lineup (which it also charges an extra $10 to access.) Have U-verse but haven't shelled out for a 3DTV, glasses, and this new channel? There's still the Multiview app to look forward to, with four ESPN channels on screen at once and coverage in up to six different languages you won't miss a single flop or injured star player during the entire tournament, we promise.Continue reading AT&T U-verse will have ESPN 3D at launch, for a fee

Toshiba BDX2500, BDX2700 Blu-ray players now available
Posted on June 2, 2010 | No CommentsThe world no longer has to wait, two of Toshiba's second generation Blu-ray players are now on sale. The BDX2500 and BDX2700 are differentiated by the former's lack of integrated WiFi and a few external design cues, but both are packing VUDU, Netflix and Blockbuster On Demand for those who don't mind switching it up for discless movie watching on occasion. The 3D capable BDX3000 is still waiting in the wings, but these should provide some competition for LG's Blu-ray boxes for now. The MSRP on the BDX2500 has dropped $20 to $179, while the BDX2700 is still $249, which should make them a more compelling option than last year's initial BDX2000 effort.Continue reading Toshiba BDX2500, BDX2700 Blu-ray players now available

Motorola’s 4 tuner DVR for Japan
Posted on May 31, 2010 | No CommentsIf there was any doubt that cable operators were to blame for the crappy set-top boxes most people use -- and not Motorola or Cisco -- then this VIP2060 puts it to rest. This DVR will likely never see the US shores with its four tuners and 500GB hard drive because that would be just too awesome. Add in the box's ability to tune IPTV, satellite and over the air signals and it really makes it a dream box that we'll never get. Of course all these specs don't shed any light on quality of the software and since the box is unobtainable, we're going to just believe that the software is dreaded, because that is what its going to take to get us through this post.Motorola's 4 tuner DVR for Japan originally appeared on Engadget HD on Mon, 31 May 2010 22:42:00 EST. Posted on May 22, 2010 | No CommentsRCN's Netflix, Amazon VOD and HD UI-lacking TiVo Premiere boxes are now available to Empire State customers, the first region outside of Washington D.C. to get access. It looks like the bundle packages vary from D.C.'s slightly based on internet speed, but adding a Premiere on is still a $19.95 per month charge. So New York City TiVo fans, the choice is yours: RCN's VOD or everyone elses, which do you prefer?
