US consumers purchase $55 million worth of 3D TVs and Blu-ray players, despite the glasses
Posted on June 25, 2010 | No CommentsIt's early days yet, but NPD claims that revenue from US sales of 3D TVs and standalone 3D-capable Blu-ray players has exceeded $55 million in the first three months of availability. Mind you, this steady growth comes despite the absence of some major players. While that number might sound big, it's tiny in comparison to the total number of TVs sold each month in the US and, according to our friend Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis at NPD, sales are expected to remain small throughout 2010. Regarding those much maligned 3D glasses, only 10% of those surveyed by NPD cited "looking silly" as a main concern. Instead, the biggest concern was not having enough glasses on hand for everyone looking at the set. A concern driven by cost, undoubtedly, and a dearth of survey participants from New York's trendy Lower East Side.

Sears and Kmart launch streaming video service this Christmas

As physical media sales continue to drop it looks like the smart money is in streaming content. Now Sears (and Kmart, which it owns) is getting in the game with the Alphaline Entertainment service. Powered by Sonic's RoxioNow (which is the same architecture that as Best Buy and Wal-Mart's services), Alphaline will be available on TVs and Blu-ray players manufactured by Sharp, LG, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, and RCA. Setup of your device is included in the sale price, which is pretty great on the off chance you are less able to setup consumer electronics than your typical Kmart employee. Vizio rolls out dual-band ‘HD’ router, trio of WiFi-equipped Blu-ray players

WiFi-equipped TVs may have been Vizio's big focus at CES earlier this year, but it's now expanding things to some other devices as well -- it's just announced a trio of WiFi-equipped Blu-ray players, and a dual-band 'HD" router to go along with them. That router, the XWR100, apparently earns the 'HD' designation by prioritizing HD media streamed to Vizio's VIA-enabled devices, like the company's three just-announced Blu-ray players. Those include the VBR210, VBR220 and VBR231, the latter of which is the first dual-band wireless Blu-ray player, and all of which include Vizio Internet Apps (or VIA) to stream content from Vudu, Netflix and other services. Look for the router (pictured after the break) to set you back $99.99 when it rolls out sometime in the third quarter, while the three Blu-ray players will be available this month and next for $189.99 and $199.99. Google Maps, Facebook come to Samsung TVs & Blu-ray players
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsWe still don't know if Samsung will put Google's Android into its TVs, but it has recently launched Google Maps and Facebook as a part of its existing Samsung Apps platform. There aren't a lot of details in the press release (included after the break) but buyers of most of the 2010 line HDTVs, Blu-ray players and HTIB systems should have access to them. We've seen demos of how Samsung Apps can tie phones and TVs together easily, but can a mere Google Maps app match the Google TVs ability to push info back and forth from device to device? The Facebook app on Xbox 360 is moderately useful if only as a way to browse photo albums on the HDTV, so we'll also be waiting to find out if it will at least match that functionality.

Toshiba BDX2500, BDX2700 Blu-ray players now available
Posted on June 2, 2010 | No CommentsThe world no longer has to wait, two of Toshiba's second generation Blu-ray players are now on sale. The BDX2500 and BDX2700 are differentiated by the former's lack of integrated WiFi and a few external design cues, but both are packing VUDU, Netflix and Blockbuster On Demand for those who don't mind switching it up for discless movie watching on occasion. The 3D capable BDX3000 is still waiting in the wings, but these should provide some competition for LG's Blu-ray boxes for now. The MSRP on the BDX2500 has dropped $20 to $179, while the BDX2700 is still $249, which should make them a more compelling option than last year's initial BDX2000 effort.
