Poll: Do you think Avatar will ship on Blu-ray 3D this year?
Posted on May 29, 2010 | No CommentsFox's flat denial appeared to squelch the possibility of a 2010 release of Avatar on Blu-ray 3D disc, but HollywoodinHiDef is suggesting Panasonic has secured an exclusive and will pack it in with HDTVs and Blu-ray players in November. Of course, that matches the original information mentioned to the Wall Street Journal by James Cameron, plus Panasonic has participated heavily in the movie's promotion and would love a little return on its investment sooner rather than later. Still, this remains firmly in rumor territory so we'll bring the question to you, will we be able to watch Avatar in 3D, at home, in 2010?

French Tennis Open 3D broadcasts going out across Europe
Posted on May 24, 2010 | No CommentsThe French Tennis Open is under way at Roland Garros and, courtesy of Panasonic, all matches played on centre Court, Court Phlippe Chatrier, will be broadcast in 3D to retail locations in the UK and Ireland and to Orange TV subscribers across France. This is the first time we've seen tennis offered in 3D and is the first "multi-day sporting event in Europe" to be shown live in 3D. Check out Panasonic Europe's site for more info on the 3000 retail locations expected to air the footage, and if Federer whiffs on a match point again you can see it in the highest quality available.

Panasonic launches Skype for 2010 VIERA Cast TVs

We managed to get an early look at Panasonic's TV-friendly implementation of Skype back at CES in January, but the company has just now finally activated the app on all of its 2010 VIERA Cast-enabled TVs (including the VT25, VT20, G25, and G20 Series). To take advantage of it, however, you'll also have to shell out $170 for Panasonic's TY-CC10W webcam, which supports both VGA and 720p video, and packs four unidirectional microphones, an echo canceling system, and some beam-forming technology that promises to deliver clear audio over a typical TV viewing distance of three to four meters. Panasonic shows its stuff at The Cable Show including a remote user interface
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No CommentsPanasonic always goes all out for The Cable Show, more so than most of the big consumer electronics companies and this year is no different. Obviously there were a few 3DTVs and tru2way set-top boxes for service providers, but what's new is its JavaScript based Remote User Interface (RUI) technology called AJAX-CE (Asynchronous JavaScript + XML CE). Now we're big fans of remote user interfaces and the promises they bring, but with DLNA having one protocol, the RVU Alliance having another, we wonder if anyone really needs a third. Panasonic is hoping that service providers choose theirs, but with most cable operators raving about DLNA's and DirecTV and FiOS showing lots of love for RVU, we're not sure who's left looking. Samsung and Panasonic 3DTVs use same active shutter glasses tech, but are (mostly) incompatible
Posted on May 5, 2010 | No CommentsAt a recent London shindig to promote its 3D television sets, Samsung revealed that the active shutter glasses used to view its glorious, mighty, breathtaking 3D content are based on the same technology as Panasonic's, only they're reversed. That is to say, using your Sammy 3D specs to view Panasonic's 3DTVs won't work -- unless you flip them upside down. You read that right, the two companies have opted for different implementations of the same technology, resulting in the farcical outcome that glasses will be interchangeable between their sets only if you're happy to wear them upside down. How that's gonna help the 3D takeup effort, we don't know, but Samsung R&D chief Simon Lee does see a light at the end of this dim, poorly focused tunnel, stating that manufacturers are likely to agree a common active shutter glasses standard "as early as next year." You might wanna look XpanD's way if you want universal compatibility before then, or away in disgust if you're already tired of all the absurdity surrounding 3D.
