As physical media sales continue to drop it looks like the smart money is in streaming content. Now Sears (and Kmart, which it owns) is getting in the game with the Alphaline Entertainment service. Powered by Sonic's RoxioNow (which is the same architecture that as Best Buy and Wal-Mart's services), Alphaline will be available on TVs and Blu-ray players manufactured by Sharp, LG, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, and RCA. Setup of your device is included in the sale price, which is pretty great on the off chance you are less able to setup consumer electronics than your typical Kmart employee. Keep an eye out for the service this holiday season. PR after the break.

Continue reading Sears and Kmart launch streaming video service this Christmas

Sears and Kmart launch streaming video service this Christmas originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 10:49:00 EST. Say goodbye to the former king of Panasonic plasmas, the old 103-inch that toured the country and took center stage in presidential elections is old news, moved aside for a new family of commercial displays including the 152-inch 4K resolution 3DTV towered over all at this year's CES. Just in case 4096 x 2160 is too much resolution, there are 103- and 85-inch 1080p versions available as well, but seriously, look at that thing. You know Mark Cuban is going to buy one -- why shouldn't you? Because you don't have $500,000+ laying around, because it can't possibly fit in your house, because you'd never go outside again if you owned one -- stop making excuses, it's unbecoming.
Continue reading Panasonic's 152-inch 4K-resolution 3D plasma ships this fall

Panasonic's 152-inch 4K-resolution 3D plasma ships this fall originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 09 Jun 2010 03:51:00 EST.

So far, Panasonic's well-reviewed (and naturally, 3D capable) 2010 V-series plasmas have been exclusively a 50-inch and above affair, but it's just announced 46- and 42-inch versions for Japan priced at ¥350,000 ($3,833) and ¥300,000 ($3,285), respectively. Due July 30, it's a fair bet they'll make their way over here in a similar time frame (and with predictably lower MSRPs) just like their larger brethren. Panasonic has reported brisk sales of its initial 3D televisions, but as production ramps up and supply expands, TVs like these are a better fit for many rooms -- and budgets -- so with 3D channels and gaming ready to appear, we'll be eyeing their reception by consumers especially closely.
Panasonic announces 46-, 42-inch plasma 3DTVs for Japan originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 09 Jun 2010 00:45:00 EST. The U.S. may have been first with a Blu-ray 3D capable authoring facility, but Europe and Asia are on the case, with Imagion AG delivering the EU's first 3D disc (ironically, if we're not Alanis Morrisette-ing the meaning, Grand Canyon Adventure) and Panasonic replicating its US facility in Roppongi,Tokyo. Of course, over here it's still a wait and see game to find out when the first retail 3D release arrives, but seeing some of the same names that pushed through early Blu-ray disc technology is a welcome sign things should ramp up quickly.
Japan, Europe ready to deliver Blu-ray 3D discs originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sun, 06 Jun 2010 23:41:00 EST. If you've been waiting for new audio gear that features HDMI 1.4 and leverages its new features like the ability to pass Full 3D HD and an auto return channel, here are two new ones. The most interesting of the new lineup is the SC-ZT2 wireless audio system (pictured above) which uses two wireless speakers to render the same surround sound as a 7.1 system -- or so Panasonic says, but we'll have to take their word on the sound quality, but no doubt it looks cool. It is available now and retails for $999. Also new to the lineup is the SC-HTB10 and SC-HTB500 sound bars. The 500 features a separate subwoofer and will be available in August for $349, while the 10 has an integrated sub and will be available this month for $199. Fox's flat denial appeared to squelch the possibility of a 2010 release of Avatar on Blu-ray 3D disc, but HollywoodinHiDef is suggesting Panasonic has secured an exclusive and will pack it in with HDTVs and Blu-ray players in November. Of course, that matches the original information mentioned to the Wall Street Journal by James Cameron, plus Panasonic has participated heavily in the movie's promotion and would love a little return on its investment sooner rather than later. Still, this remains firmly in rumor territory so we'll bring the question to you, will we be able to watch Avatar in 3D, at home, in 2010?
The French Tennis Open is under way at Roland Garros and, courtesy of Panasonic, all matches played on centre Court, Court Phlippe Chatrier, will be broadcast in 3D to retail locations in the UK and Ireland and to Orange TV subscribers across France. This is the first time we've seen tennis offered in 3D and is the first "multi-day sporting event in Europe" to be shown live in 3D. Check out Panasonic Europe's site for more info on the 3000 retail locations expected to air the footage, and if Federer whiffs on a match point again you can see it in the highest quality available.
Continue reading French Tennis Open 3D broadcasts going out across Europe

French Tennis Open 3D broadcasts going out across Europe originally appeared on Engadget HD on Mon, 24 May 2010 14:39:00 EST.
We managed to get an early look at Panasonic's TV-friendly implementation of Skype back at CES in January, but the company has just now finally activated the app on all of its 2010 VIERA Cast-enabled TVs (including the VT25, VT20, G25, and G20 Series). To take advantage of it, however, you'll also have to shell out $170 for Panasonic's TY-CC10W webcam, which supports both VGA and 720p video, and packs four unidirectional microphones, an echo canceling system, and some beam-forming technology that promises to deliver clear audio over a typical TV viewing distance of three to four meters. Head on past the break for the complete press release, as well as Panasonic's requisite old-people-don't-get-technology ad for the TVs.

Panasonic always goes all out for The Cable Show, more so than most of the big consumer electronics companies and this year is no different. Obviously there were a few 3DTVs and tru2way set-top boxes for service providers, but what's new is its JavaScript based Remote User Interface (RUI) technology called AJAX-CE (Asynchronous JavaScript + XML CE). Now we're big fans of remote user interfaces and the promises they bring, but with DLNA having one protocol, the RVU Alliance having another, we wonder if anyone really needs a third. Panasonic is hoping that service providers choose theirs, but with most cable operators raving about DLNA's and DirecTV and FiOS showing lots of love for RVU, we're not sure who's left looking. Full release after the jump.
Continue reading Panasonic shows its stuff at The Cable Show including a remote user interface

Panasonic shows its stuff at The Cable Show including a remote user interface originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 12 May 2010 20:42:00 EST.

At a recent London shindig to promote its 3D television sets, Samsung revealed that the active shutter glasses used to view its glorious, mighty, breathtaking 3D content are based on the same technology as Panasonic's, only they're reversed. That is to say, using your Sammy 3D specs to view Panasonic's 3DTVs won't work -- unless you flip them upside down. You read that right, the two companies have opted for different implementations of the same technology, resulting in the farcical outcome that glasses will be interchangeable between their sets only if you're happy to wear them upside down. How that's gonna help the 3D takeup effort, we don't know, but Samsung R&D chief Simon Lee does see a light at the end of this dim, poorly focused tunnel, stating that manufacturers are likely to agree a common active shutter glasses standard "as early as next year."
