The world needs another network media player like it needs another eight billion barrels of oil floating around in the Gulf of Mexico, but if you're somehow still struggling to decide on one of the many, many options available to you, ViewSonic has an alternative up for consideration. The new NexTV VMP75 is a rather compact set-top box, donning a glossy black finish and proud support for streaming Netflix Watch Instantly content. You'll also get local and network playback of whatever content you've got laying around on your nearby hard drives, and around back, you'll find an Ethernet socket (WiFi is optional), eSATA / USB combo port, a dedicated USB socket (for connecting thumb drives and external HDDs), a S/PDIF audio port, HDMI output and an AV aux plug. ViewSonic claims that you can also stream content from YouTube, SHOUTcast, Flickr and Live365.com, and there's even an inbuilt web browser if you take pleasure in (presumably) torturous experiences. All you? If so, it's up for pre-order right now at Amazon and Newegg for $129.99.
Continue reading ViewSonic streams Netflix, other stuff with NexTV VMP75 networked media player

ViewSonic streams Netflix, other stuff with NexTV VMP75 networked media player originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Jun 2010 18:35:00 EST.
The start of World Cup 2010 and launch of ESPN 3D gave us plenty to talk about, and that's before we got to Sony's 3DTV and Blu-ray 3D announcements, the 152-inch plasma shipping this fall from Panasonic, and ITV HD ruining the big game for an entire nation. there's plenty of sadness to go around however, with Boxee delays, DirecTV glitches and TiVo / DISH squabbling. Microsoft's new Xbox 360, along with ESPN3 access and an upgraded Netflix interface gave us plenty to talk about -- we'll see if it's actually whisper quiet. We wrap things up with the new TiVo remote and this week's Ask Engadget HD, HDTV or projector?
Proudly stating it's the first gaming console to let you update your queue without a computer (Roku does it too, but try playing Gears of War on that) there's no word on any Kinect tie-ins, probably the reason it didn't get any higher billing than a bullet point in Marc Whitten's 2010 letter to Xbox Live members.
Netflix for Xbox 360 adds search in November originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 14 Jun 2010 15:51:00 EST.

And not just things that should go, like season 2 and on from Heroes. We're getting reports (and have noticed in our own queues) that things like 30 Rock, Lost, The Office, Prison Break, MI-5 and pretty much any other show we'd like to watch have dropped from available for streaming over Watch Instantly to coming soon or unknown. Searching the website intermittently showed them available, and then they disappeared completely -- including any options for Blu-ray and DVD rental -- which would appear to indicate this is just an extension of severe problems it's been experiencing since yesterday, reported by Hacking Netflix. The pessimists in the crowd have floated the possibility that licensing issues, potentially due to some premium Hulu service on the way, are the villains in this case of the vanishing videos. We're not so sure that's the case and have reached out to Netflix to find out what's going on, but any plans to check out Liz Lemon and the crew this afternoon are ruined -- you may have to actually get some work done.

Update: The @NetflixHelps twitter account has posted this is a "purely technical" issue that it's currently working to resolve so put your worries aside, explaining the sudden burst of productivity to your boss will be difficult enough.

Update 2: The same account now reports things have returned to normal, and a quick glance at our queue appears to confirm it. Consider the weekend begun.

Last year, Bittorrent portal Vuze allowed you to push downloaded video directly to game consoles and iDevices, sure, but the company's latest product promises to let you pull media from the internet and any network-connected device right to your TV. Dubbed "Project Leap," the application lets you simply type in the name of a film and searches your local computers, attached storage, Amazon, Hulu and Netflix databases for a match, after which point you can play, add it to your queue, begin instant streaming or purchase (if need be). The program pulls up a widget-like selection of additional data as well, including Rotten Tomatoes reviews and YouTube trailers, and those who enjoy company with their digital celluloid will be happy to hear to hear Twitter, Fandango and live internet chat might make appearances as well.

Though we didn't get hands-on for ourselves, the scrolling, card-based interface seemed plenty polished in its present, five-button (up, down, left, right, ok) iteration -- the challenge now is to find a device manufacturer who'll build it into a set-top box or connected TV. Vuze CEO Gilles BianRosa said he might settle for it becoming a Google TV app or Yahoo widget itself, but only if the final combined product was simple; no offense to septuagenarian matriarchs, we're sure, but he told us it must be "grandmother" easy. While he said he's already received interest from unnamed consumer electronics companies, the product will launch one way or another -- even if Leap doesn't land in embedded hardware quite yet, a beta will be available in September for Mac and PC.
Project Leap hopes to hop into your TV screen, source-agnostic VOD in tow originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 11 Jun 2010 04:12:00 EST.

We're getting a ton of tips about Netflix being broken in Safari 5, and while we're pretty sure Reed Hastings and crew will have things patched up in the morning, we thought we'd share the quick fix with you now, since it's so simple. The problem isn't actually Safari 5, it's the browser agent string -- Netflix doesn't recognize it as a supported browser, so all you have to do is turn on the developer menu and change Safari's user agent back to 4.1. Ready? It's just a couple steps:

Open Preferences > Advanced and click "Show Develop menu in menu bar".

In the Develop menu, select User Agent and hit "Safari 4.1".

Watch some Netflix!

Of course, you'll have to switch it back to use any Safari 5-optimized sites that check for the latest version of Apple's browser, but that's not too hard -- and like we said, we're guessing the Netflix crew will have this sorted in no time, so you shouldn't need to worry about this in the future.

Update: Told you they'd get it fixed soon enough -- reader Colin tells us things are working fine with Safari 5 as of this morning.
How to re-enable Netflix in Safari 5 (updated) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 23:22:00 EST.

Roku originally told us its new Netflix channel would roll out in June, but it looks like things are actually happening a little early -- the updated interface will go live starting tomorrow, and it'll be rolling out to everyone over the next week. As promised, the new interface lets you search the entire Netflix Watch Instantly library directly from your TV, and you'll be able to browse through Netflix categories like New Releases, Action, and Comedy as well, which definitely makes the casual turn-on-and-watch experience far easier and nicer. We do wish there was a filter for HD content, though, and we noticed some lag as titles and artwork loaded in when we clicked around a little too fast, but there weren't any major hassles apart from the general annoyance of trying to type on an on-screen keyboard with a remote control. A little Bluetooth integration in the next revision would be nice -- or hey, why not a smartphone app? Overall, though, the new channel is a nice solid update for Roku owners, and we certainly can't argue with free.
We're still not exactly sure why so many people have complained about the Netflix iPad app's lack of video-out support, but rest easy folks -- your cries of despair have been heard. Version 1.0.2, now live in the App Store, supports video out using the component, composite, and VGA dongles, as well as addressing some lingering bugs. To be perfectly honest, we'd much rather stream Netflix in HD using one of the many set-top options out there while hanging on to the iPad for some casual surfing on the side, but we won't tell you how to rock it... just so long as you rock it raw.
We already knew Windows Media Center users could stream Netflix Watch Instantly in HD now, but after an update it is able to note which titles support HD streaming to the PC. The next time you pull it up, expect to download the app like it was the first time and sign in all over again, otherwise things are pretty much the same. We poked around a bit and didn't see any other UI tweaks beyond that "HD" tag below the supported movies and TV shows, but it's still one of the slickest Netflix frontends around -- at least until Roku gets its update. Want to see if you're actually getting the 720p feeds? Hold down ALT + SHIFT and left click to bring up the stream manager, speeds of 2600kbps or 3800 kbps mean you're there.
