The latest version (2.8.1) of the TiVo Desktop software is official, and it's added a few new features in both its free edition and the upgraded Plus package. The basic software has added a few additional settings, but the most notable is the ability to view folders on a PC from the DVR itself. Those paying $24.95 for TiVo Desktop Plus should notice increased video quality on PSP TiVoToGo exports, plus new profiles for the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, DROID, Pre and several Blackberry models. Dave Zatz has already gotten his hands on the latest version, reporting some issues connecting to a TiVo Premiere; hit the download page for your own copy and let us know how it works.
TiVo Desktop Software hits version 2.8.1, adds folder view from PC, export for iPad, Pre & more originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 11 Jun 2010 13:33:00 EST. A backside-illuminated 5 megapixel sensor is about to grace the new iPhone's rear, equipped with an LED flash and 720p / 30fps video recording. Tap to focus will also be rolled out in the iPhone Quattro, and Steve Jobs is keen to impress on us all that although the megapixel count has grown, the quality of images has apparently improved. That's what they all say. The added functionality of iMovie won't come for free, however, with Apple asking a $4.99 tithe for granting access to its more sophisticated video editing options. This is moving things along, to be sure, but why is the upper limit of storage still 32GB? A more generous apportionment of memory would've gone very nicely indeed with that HD video mode.
As HD geeks there aren't many things we enjoy more than a spirited debate on an online venue and for our interests none are matched by the great AVS Forum -- other than our very own comments of course. We've learned more from this single source than all others combined -- well maybe not if you include Wikipedia -- and often get into it pretty thick with other participants. So you can imagine our joy to learn we have a new way to call out those that are wrong while we're on the go without having to carry around a full laptop. Overall we have to say we find the app very useful and at free it sure is priced right.
AVSForum launches free iPhone App originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 02 Jun 2010 21:31:00 EST. In case you hadn't heard, Steve Jobs got downright conversational last night at D8, riffing on questions from Walt, Kara, and the attending audience of elites. We put some extra scintillating quotes after the break to shield the eyes of your children. Just a note, however: all of these are paraphrased quotes typed live as Steve was speaking, and not to be construed as the verbatim Word of Steve Jobs, though the gist is certainly there.
Continue reading Steve Jobs at D8: Foxconn, iPhone prototype, TVs, and more

Steve Jobs at D8: Foxconn, iPhone prototype, TVs, and more originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 02 Jun 2010 11:25:00 EST. Sure, you read our liveblog of Steve Jobs' D8 conference -- and believe us, it's heavily quotable -- but don't you want to see and hear the Apple CEO claim HyperCard was huge in its day? Or perhaps you're more interested in his thoughts on Flash, market cap, and the iPad origins -- either way, videos are after the break, with presumably more to come from All Things D.
Dashing away from the Google I/O keynote as fast as our feet would carry us, we scored the very first look at Logitech's Google TV companion box. While we'll share full details when we catch a breath, here's the scoop: the box extends the full functionality of a Logitech Harmony remote and a WiFi access point to your TV, providing not only Google TV but also allowing you to control your entire entertainment system (including DVR) with a still-in-development keyboard / touchpad remote or an iPhone or Android smartphone app over WiFi. Hit the gallery below for a taste of what the little set-top box can do, and rest assured we've got more info on the way.

Update: Now with video, after the break.

Update 2: Details and specs after the break, too.
Oh sure, having Boxee nailed down to the desktop of your PC is fine and dandy, and that Boxee Box will ensure that the same experience is enjoyed by all who plant their fundament in front of your HDTV. But we all know what you're after -- lemon drops. And a mobile version of Boxee. In a post today by the company, it expressed outright joy in inking a deal with Vindicia in order to bring a payment processing solution to the platform; slated for implementation "by the end of the summer," this CashBox add-in would enable users to purchase "premium content" from Boxee's programming partners via credit card, gift card or PayPal. It's a vital step in Boxee finally finding a revenue stream (something it confessed to needing on a previous episode of The Engadget Show), and better still, "Vindicia's flexibility makes it possible for [Boxee] to enable payments on its website and across mobile platforms like the iPhone, Android and iPad." Yeah, those are the company's own words right there, and in case you still aren't believing your eyes, chew on one final quote:

"Boxee's eventual expansion to these platforms will pave the way for universally accessible content no matter where a user is (we love this idea!)."

Huzzah!
Boxee for iPhone, iPad and Android all but confirmed in Vindicia payment processing deal originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 May 2010 20:26:00 EST. Shockingly enough, people seem to be interested in the possibility of easily browsing TV schedules and programming their DirecTV DVR from the iPhone / iPod Touch, for free. Available for just one week so far, it's already ticked over 100,000 downloads so yeah, it's popular, our only question is what's next? You've probably checked it out by now, let us know what features need to be changed or added, or just tee off on the fact that your TV or cellphone provider hasn't unveiled a similar setup yet, we're listening.
DirecTV's free iPhone app manages 100k downloads in its first week originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 07 Apr 2009 20:11:00 EST.
